Instagram

Instagram

Instagram: probably the most addictive of social media apps, if not all. Instagram is based primarly on visual media: pictures and videos. Users can post and share content onto their stories or feeds, and interact with other users by reacting to what they post.

Instagram has a white, simple UI. Since most of the app is taken up by photos and videos, the UI is relatively simple. The focus remains on the posts and stories rather than the app itself. Instagram uses scroll-down navigation and pull-down from the top of the page to refresh.

Netflix

Netflix

Netflix is a streaming service for TV and movies. It is also one of the most addictive apps, probably closely tied with Instagram. Netflix has hundreds of different selections to choose from and saves your watch history and favorites. It can suggest new shows based on what it thinks you will like and endless streaming is almost too easy with auto-play.

Netflix has a dark, theater like UI. It uses the same colors in its logo, red and black. Like Instagram, most of the app is flooded with images or videos. The UI remains relatively simple so that the focus remains on the various TV and movie selections.

Gmail

Gmail

Gmail is an email app from Google. Although it's primary use is communication in school, work, and business, it does have designed features that make it addictive like Instagram and Netflix. Within the app, users can receive emails, reply and compose new emails, organize their emails, and more.

Gmail has a white, minimalist UI with signature Google accent colors. Like the previous two apps, Gmail's "main" page is fairly simple and devoid of colors. It uses accent colors such as dark yellow to mark special emails and uses higher font weight for unread emails. Like Instagram, Gmail has a similar method of scrolling to navigate and pull down from the top of the page to refresh.
